Some reel manufacturers classify their reel sizes with just two numbers, such as 10, 20, etc., while other reel manufacturers classify them as sizes 1000, 2000, and so on. It’s good to know that the two systems are basically the same, just removing the zeros.

The right size reel for stripers falls in the medium and large reels category. They vary between 6000 and 7500 and should be matched with a heavy rod used for offshore boat fishing, surf casting, or rock fishing.

They can handle fish that weigh about 150+ pounds (+68 kg) and work best with 12-60lb monofilament or 24-100lb braid.
