Trout are one of the most popular game fish. They are known to be hard fighters which makes them challenging to target.

There are several types of trout species. The most common among anglers in the US are the Rainbow Trout, Steelhead Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Brown Trout, Brook Trout, Lake Trout, and Speckled Trout. They all have distinctive features that make it easier to tell them apart.

Trout are highly sensitive and can see very well. They are usually wary of any changes in their environment. They have perceptive lateral lines which help them detect vibrations in the water as well as changes in pressure.

They prefer cold temperatures and their ideal habitat is clean oxygenated water especially in weeded or muddy areas where their food usually resides.

Their diet mostly consists of dragonfly nymphs, caddis fly nymphs, leeches, snails, crawfish, and other small bait fish. They also feed on aquatic invertebrates such as insect larva

How Does Rain Affect Trout Fishing?

It’s important for anglers to understand how the weather can affect marine life.

As mentioned before, Trout are sensitive to any changes in their environment including changes in the weather or water conditions.

Storms and rain can cause some significant changes to a fish’s environment such as temperature changes, increased levels of oxygen, and drops in barometric pressure. These changes can affect Trout’s normal behavioral patterns and how it feeds

That’s why fishing for Trout on rainy days is ideal as the water will become colder and it will have more oxygen in it. This will make Trout more active and willing to hunt for potential meals.

A Guide to Trout Fishing in the Rain

Since Trout become more active in the rain, it will be much easier to target them.

However, there are some important things you need to know before fishing for Trout on a rainy day such as where to target them and what kind of gear you need to bring.

Where to Target Trout in the Rain?

Trout usually reside in streams, rivers, and lakes as they prefer clear, freshwater. They also prefer living in cold waters.

When it rains and the water temperature gets colder, they will change their location and move to shallow areas.

It’s best to target them in areas where the water depth transitions from deep to shallow. They will stay close to banks and current breaks such as rocks and trees where water moves slowly.

What Kind of Gear is Best for Targeting Trout in the Rain?

You need to be prepared with the right gear when fishing in rainy weather as it can greatly affect your chances of successfully catching Trout.

The most important thing is to wear appropriate clothing such as a waterproof jacket, pants, and fishing gloves to ensure you remain as dry and warm as possible. You can also bring a waterproof bag to keep all your gear dry.

Having the appropriate gear will help increase your endurance while you’re out on the water and you will be more comfortable fishing for a longer time.

As for the rest of your fishing gear, it’s recommended to use a 6-7-foot medium power rod with fast action which will enhance your casting accuracy. I have tested more fishing rods than I can count, and these are my all-time favorite Trout Fishing rods.

When it comes to the reel, it’s recommended to use a spinning reel. Check out the best spinning reels for trout here.

For the fishing line, it’s recommended to use a monofilament line with a 6 to 10-pound test as your mainline. You can also use a heavier braided line with a 4 to 6-pound line test. It’s also recommended to attach a fluorocarbon leader with 4 to 6-pound to avoid having the trout bite through your mainline. Here are my favorite Lines for Trout Fishing.

For the hook, it’s recommended to use size 10 to 14 if you’re using treble hooks or size 8 to 12 if you’re using single hooks. Keep in mind that trout have excellent vision and they detect hooks easily.

What Is the Best Lure for Trout Fishing in the Rain?

Rain causes the water to become murkier, which can make it difficult for trout to see lures. So, it’s recommended to use lures that create a strong vibrating action to grab their attention such as jigs or spinning lures

Trout are also attracted to lures that can naturally mimic the movement of baitfish such as crankbaits and soft plastic lures.

Keep in mind that rain increases the oxygen levels in the water which enhances the Trout’s sense of smell, so it can be very effective to use scent attractants with your lure.
